About Me
My name is Alexis Nunes, and I am a senior in the ISM program at Lone Star High School. I am also a Drum Major in the Lone Star High School Band. Outside out marching band, I also enjoy playing the Flute, Oboe and English Horn in Lone Star High School's band program. After graduating from high school, I am attending Stephen F. Austin University in Nagodoches, Texas majoring in music education.

“My mission is to spread leadership and wisdom through music”.
This year I am studying Music Education in Lone Star High School's Independent Study and Mentorship Program. I have been a band member for seven years, and was involved in my high school’s band for more than that. I have always happily participated in some sort of musical activity, which inspired me to become a band director so I can help give kids the same great experiences that I’ve had. Through my research, I’m hoping to learn more about the technicalities of this career.
My first exposure to music was in fifth grade, when my class learned how to play the recorder. Though this was required for every fifth grader in the school, I loved playing that little $5 recorder. I loved playing it so much, that the teacher had me take other students in the hallway and teach them how to play a song. I started sixth grade playing the instrument most similar to the recorder; it was the oboe. I loved every moment of middle school band, and taught myself how to play the flute in eighth grade. In my experience, high school band is one of the hardest things a teenager can do, but is the most rewarding. By the end of my freshman year, I was playing three different instruments for my high schools varsity band. By my junior year I was a flute section leader, and my senior year I am a Drum Major. I cannot imagine how drastically different my life would have been without being in a band program. I still spend all my free time devoting myself towards my band and music in some way.
As I said before, I cannot know how different my life would have been without band, but I do know I probably wouldn’t know how to work hard, be disciplined, or have as many good characteristics that I do have. Band changed my life forever in a positive way, and I want to give other people the same opportunity. I am passionate about music, and the lessons it teaches, especially having been through a high-level music program. I can understand the struggles and triumphs of band, which will better help me, help others. I know I have the passion and dedication to give teenagers some of most important and rewarding years of their life as a band director, and that is my goal.
Original Work Proposal
For my original work, I will create a leadership lesson plan designed for high school band students focusing on important characteristics of leaders. I plan to find a couple traits that I think are important for leadership, and create a lesson plan teaching the students why this idea is so important for them to utilize everyday.
To actually create the lesson plan, I will need to decide on which topics to teach. After that, I need to think of what I want my lesson to be like. I need to decide on what kind of class it will be. I want it to be interesting to listen to, but also hands on. I could also think of some games to make it fun. I won’t need to find a venue or plan anything, I just need to write, and possibly get some supplies.
I hope that the students who go through my lesson will have a better understanding of what it means to be a leader, and to have an idea of how to better the lives of their followers. This will be an original work, not because I will create every part of this lesson, but because I will take my knowledge and present it in my way.
