An Original Work is a unique piece of work intended to benefit the creator or their community in some way. It is invented from the creator’s new knowledge in their field of study.
My Original work is a presentation discussing what it means to be a leader and important qualities a leader must have.

Slide 1:
-
Introduction
-
What does it mean to be a leader?
-
Ask audience for their definition of leadership

Slide 2:
-
Give my definition of leadership
-
A Leader is a person who uses their own strengths to help others find and achieve theirs

Slide 3:
-
Read and explain quote
-
“This is not about your experience”
-
As a leader, it is your job to focus on helping others. It’s your job to make sure they have a positive experience in whatever they’re doing. Your goal as a leader shouldn’t be to focus on your success, it should be to focus on those you serve.

Slide 4:
-
Explain servant leadership
-
Servant leadership means that you’re not above others because of your position, it means that it’s your responsibility to serve others because of your position.

Slide 5:
-
Post-It activity:
-
Divide Group into multiple smaller groups
-
Each person writes down qualities they think leaders should have
-
After everyone in their group is done, they will put the sticky notes in groups if they are the same trait
-
After dividing the sticky notes into groups, they will count how many sticky notes are in each group
-
I will have a spreadsheet ready, and will record what traits each group picked, and how many sticky notes there were for each trait
-
The traits will be put in order based on how many votes it got, and the group can see what traits they think are most important for a leader to have

Slide 6:
-
I go over 5 important traits I have picked for leaders to have

Slide 7:
-
I go over perspective
-
“It helps you understand yourself and others”
-
To understand your audience, you have to understand how they think. You have to make sure you’re on the same page with them to be successful.
-
For example, if a new idea is implemented in a workspace, not everyone is going to like it. To fix this problem, you have to understand those peoples perspective to come to a compromise.
-
Once you understand how people think, it becomes easier to understand and to work with them.
-
Once you understand the way people think, it will also improve how you lead them, because you know them better.

Slide 8:
-
Empty Your Pockets Game
-
Ask everyone in the audience to empty their pockets or bags and find 6 random objects
-
Then ask them to divide the objects into 2 piles
-
Go around the room and ask how people divided their objects
-
We’ll find most people divided them differently, showing how people think differently and have different perspectives

Slide 9:
-
Awareness
-
“You need to know what’s going on around you
-
As a leader, it’s your responsibility to address and fix conflicts when they arise. You need to be aware of how your audience is feeling and responding to you. Should a conflict arise, you need to be prepared to correct the situation, and know how it will affect the group
-
You also need to be aware of how the people in your audience are doing. Everyone has problems, and it’s your job as a leader to help them through them.

Slide 10:
-
Book Game
-
For this game, you need to an open space, and something to make a ‘finish line’
-
You also need the audience to find a book or folder
-
Each person will balance their book on their head, and try to make it across the finish line first. The catch is that if they drop their book, they have to freeze, and someone else has to put the book back on their head, they cannot put it back on themselves
-
After you say GO, the group will find that most people will try and get across the finish line as soon as possible, but someone will get left behind, because no one stopped to help them
-
This shows how easily someone can be left behind, and how leaders need to stay behind and be ready to help their group

Slide 11:
-
Flexibility
-
“Very little will go as planned”
-
It’s important for leaders to have plans, but it’s even more important to realize that your plan will change. You have to be ready to adapt to changes
-
You may not like every situation you’re put in, but you still have to be a positive force on your group
-
For example, if your boss implements a rule no one in your office likes, you still have to promote it to those under you, because that’s your job

Slide 12:
-
Chair Game
-
For this game you have to clear a large area, and make a ‘starting line’ and a ‘finish line’
-
Divide the group into 2 smaller groups
-
The objective of the game is for a team to cross the finish line before the other team
-
The catch is that the space in between the starting and finishing line is ‘lava’, so no one can touch the ground in that space.
-
Give both groups the same amount of chairs
-
The groups have to figure out a way to use the chairs to make a path to the other side
-
You’ll find that both groups will make seperate paths with their chairs and try to beat the the other team even though it’s very hard to do
-
Afterwards, you can explain to the group that it would have been easier to work together and use all the chairs together to make an easier path
-
This shows the ability to adapt. The plan was the have 2 teams, but working together is a more effective solution

Slide 13:
-
Perseverance
-
“It’s lonely at the top”
-
A leader is a person who endures a lot of negativity but has to constantly give positivity, which is not easy. This saying means that even though a leader endures negativity, they can’t share it with anyone in their group, because they’re job is to be positive and motivating
-
This is hard, because leaders have to find a way to push through the negative to find a way to give out positivity
-
This job is also hard, because people will disagree with you and disrespect you, but leaders have to persevere through that to help the group
-
No matter what, a leader is responsible for helping the group improve, even though they face conflict

Slide 14:
-
Red Rover
-
Divide into 2 even groups
-
Groups link hands
-
A player says “Red Rover, Red Rover send (player on opposite team) over!”
-
The player called on must run over to the other team and try to break through their linked hands
-
If they break the link they can steal a player from that team, and bring them to their team
-
If they don’t break the link, they must join that team
-
The game ends when everyone is on one team
-
This shows how leaders have to push through conflicts and things that oppose them

Slide 15:
-
Communication
-
“People need to know why you do what you do”
-
Leaders have to give their groups direction, but they have to tell them why they want to go that direction
-
People will work harder if they know why they’re doing what they’re doing
-
On the other hand, you also have to listen to your team to know how they’re feeling about the direction you’re sending them

Slide 16:
-
Maze Game
-
For this game, you have to find a small space that you can tie rope around to make an enclosed space, preferably in the shape of a square or triangle
-
You tell the group that you’re going to put them in a maze, and blindfold them
-
Once blindfolded, they will put one hand on the rope enclosing them, and the other on someone’s shoulder, making them form a line
-
They will then be put in an enclosure they think is an elaborate maze, but is actually a small geometric shape
-
Leave a small opening that the group can’t feel very easily and let them wander around in the ‘maze’
-
If someone finds their way out, a person will be standing right by the ext and immediately tell them not to talk, so the people in the maze don’t know that they got out, or know where the exit is
-
Typically people won’t say when they find the exit, they just walk out
-
This shows how people can get left behind, or can be confused when there isn’t clear communication, and how important it is to talk to your team
Slide 17:
-
Explain that being a leader isn’t easy, but one of the most rewarding things you can do
-
Also explain that people don’t need to be in a leadership position to exhibit these traits

Slide 18:
-
Thank you!
