I had my first interview!! I interviewed Dr. Daryl Trent, who had been a band director for many many years, and was also Frisco ISD’s first Director of Fine Arts. It was a very good experience, though it was a little nerve-wracking. I was nervous before I even left to go to the interview spot. So nervous, in fact, I showed up 30 minutes early and just sat alone at Starbucks. (Who knew Starbucks was so busy at 11:00 in the morning?) But as soon as the actual interview began, I was much more comfortable. Dr. Trent obviously has very good experience and had lots of good advice. Some of his biggest points were to push through, and to be all about teaching. He told me to push through college, but also the first couple years of being a band director. He said that most young band directors quit their first couple years, mostly because its “pay your dues” type of thing, but if you make it past them, it will be the best job ever. He also said the best method of teaching is to just teach. To make every moment a learning moment. It’s also the teachers job to help the kids improve. If students don’t improve, then it would be my fault as an educator. Overall, I really enjoyed the opportunity to sit and talk with someone with that much experience, and to learn so much from them!
