This week I taught the middle school class for the first time! It did not go very well! Here’s how I broke it down in my mind. I’m teaching the oboe class, which is the instrument I play. There’s three children, which isn’t a lot, but I’m used to teaching large groups of 20 or 25 people so this was very off putting. These kids have also just started playing the oboe, so when I’m asked for advice, I have to think about how much I need to tell them. Because I’m used to playing at a higher level, and it’s hard for me to know where to draw the line of how much to tell them without confusing them. I also only see them once a week, so I don’t know what they learned when I was gone. It was kind of awkward and I feel I didn't make a great first impression. But I know next week will be better, and the week after that, and so on. I do like that I have a lesson plan, so I know what I’m doing when I’m up on front of them. Makes me feel official.
