Yay for my first blog! I have been in ISM roughly for three weeks, and so far it has been somewhat frustrating. I’m trying research music leadership as a career, but turns out that’s not really a career! Music leadership means teaching leadership skills to high school students involved in band or some form of music class. I became interested in this because of all the leadership camps I've participated in through student leadership. When I went to these camps, there were actual companies that specifically taught leadership skills to high school music students, so I assumed this was a viable thing to study. But as I have found out through research, this is more of a part-time job for most people in this field. By researching and contacting people in this field, it seems like they’re all band directors, who are only involved in those leadership companies part time. I was also given advice from a man working at SASI, ( a group that specifically teaches music leadership), to be a music major, with a minor in behavioral psychology, or even leadership. So in order to ultimately teach musical leadership, I will need to be a band director. (Very) fortunately for me, I already had a very similar plan to this, but it was still frustrating to me to want to learn more about this and have very limited information. Continuing forward, I will probably focus my attention on researching being a band director, and if I can obtain any more information on this I will.
